Buying a domain name? Some things you should know…

When you buy a domain name, it is important to know the potential value this address can hold.

Domain names are usually priced per year. This mean, when you buy a domain name, you don’t actually buy it. Rather, you only bought the right to use the domain name for a specific period. When you terminate the web name provider’s service, you will cease the use of the domain name, making it available for the other people’s use.

But why would anyone want to buy a domain name that was already used? Simple: branding. If, for instance, your previous domain name was already established or branded as a specific type of website, it will fetch in more money. This is what happened with Altavista.com, which cost more than three million dollars in 1998 because it was already branded as a search engine.

Also, because of online marketing, domain names were suddenly given premium during the rise of internet’s popularity. Because of this, while the usual domain names’ price remained the same, many high priority domain names were priced quite exorbitantly. This concept is applies today, something that you may have to consider when you buy a domain name. This is important when you buy a domain name because there are a number of domain names that already have a built in audience or visitors because of its name or its branding.

In any case, just as long as you choose a good domain, it wouldn’t matter if it is high priority. You will still get the visitors you deserve when you buy a domain name.
